DIY Underfloor Heating - The Basics
Keeping it in a nutshell, there are basically two types of Underfloor Heating available.
Wet Underfloor Heating System. This type of system is more usually installed with a new build or major renovation, as considerable building work is required. If this is the type of system you are looking for then I recommend that you speak to a professional, to find out the level of work required, and if it is something you would want to tackle yourself.
Electric Underfloor Heating System. This would normally be the type of system chosen for a self-install. However, I would say, that you need to be a competent DIY´er, and confident that you have the tools, ability and time to carry out this type of project. DIY underfloor heating is not a project I would recommend for someone who is brand new to DIY.
The Benefits of Underfloor Heating
Underfloor heating is a system which has many benefits, in any type of building enviroment, and in just about any type of flooring.
A very flexible system.
Provides comfortable warmth.
Its NOT expensive to install.
Its an environmentally friendly product.
It uses less energy and is therefore cheaper to run.
The flexibility of Underfloor heating.
Underfloor heating provides comfortable and effective room heating, be this in a house, office, work area, library, gymnasium, whatever.
The fact that underfloor heating can be installed in just about any type of floor whether they are new concrete floors, renovated kitchen and bathroom tile floors, new or renovated wooden floors.
You cannot see underfloor heating.
Hey, look Ma ... No pipes!!
And no ugly radiators taking up wall space.
By being under the floor it provides new areas for furnishing and interior design.
Underfloor heating provides a comfortable warmth.
Hot Air Rises! Ask my mother-in-law. This simple fact explains why underfloor heating provides a more comfortable warmth than the normal radiator system.
Normal radiator systems put out heat at about head height. This hot air then keeps rising up to the ceiling. It then cools, and drifts downwards to return as cold air round your feet.
Underfloor heating provides the heat to the room from the floor up, rather than heating the ceiling space first. It also uses lower temperatures because the larger heating surface does not need to put out so much heat per square metre as a radiator.
And, as it produces only a gentle air circulation, the amount of dust particles in the air is reduced quite considerably which is a great relief for people who suffer from hay fever and other such allegies.
Underfloor heating is NOT expensive to install.
Underfloor heating is no more expensive to install than any other type of heating system with similar abilities. As a guideline, underfloor heating is usually about 20-40 percent cheaper to install.
Underfloor heating has a long life. The heating cables will last as long as the building into which they are installed. And with no maintainance.
The life expectancy of the thermostats is about 10 years or so. But its a lot cheaper and easier to replace a thermostat than it is to replace an entire heating system
Underfloor heating is environmentally friendly.
As previously mentioned, a underfloor heating system uses energy in a much more efficient manner than conventional radiator heating systems. This means that underfloor heating systems use about 15 percent less energy to achieve the same temperature level for the average home, and will therefore, equally reduce the effect on the environment.
Underfloor heating is a Money Saver.
Underfloor heating is a heating system which provides the lowest possible loss of energy. Because it is actually in the floor the heat has no where to go, except into the room above it. And by installing a precise thermostat, this means that the average room temperature of 22°C can be lowered to 19°C.
This means that the energy loss is reduced by about 15 percent.
Which in turn, means the system consumes less fuel, which then means lower running costs and less damage to your wallet, and less environmental damage.
Yeeehhaaarrr ... lower bills!!
